• GPS Driving School is approved by the NC DMV to conduct road tests for teens seeking their Level II driver's license!

To transition from a learner's permit to a driver's license, teens must pass a road test.  Until recently, all road tests had to be taken at a DMV driver's license office.  Now, the road test can be taken either at the DMV or at a DMV-approved driving school such as GPS Driving School.  To take the road test, you must be (1) at least 16 years old, (2) have a valid Level I learner's permit (3) have held the permit for at least 9 months, and (4) have logged 60 or more driving hours in accordance with the driving log rules.

Why take the road test at GPS Driving School instead of at the DMV?

Upon passing the road test at GPS Driving School, we will give you a Certificate which says you passed.  You will then present this to the DMV saving you time and possibly saving you a second trip to the DMV should you not pass the road test on the first attempt.  At the DMV, there is a seven day waiting period before you can retake the exam.  At our school, the wait time for retake is 48 hours.

Our road test professionals are kind, caring, and fair.  They will take the time necessary to explain the test and have the test taker feel as comfortable as possible.

How does the road test work at GPS Driving School?

The road test takes place at GPS Driving School in Clayton, NC.  Bill Messick administers the test.  Bill and his wife Kristine own and operate GPS Driving School.  Opened in 2016, the school has taught over 3,000 students and held more than 100 classes.  The road test at GPS is very similar to the one administered by the DMV.  Just like the DMV road test, it takes about 10 minutes and requires the same skills to pass.

What is the cost of taking the road test?

The fee is $125 which includes the use of our vehicle for the test (optional), an online video produced by GPS Driving School entitled "safe driving tips", and one complimentary re-take if you do not pass the first time.

What if I do not pass?

Bill will go over with you in detail the areas that you need to practice and will provide you with a written explanation.  You can retake the exam 2 days later.  At our school, the first re-test is free of charge.
