• DMV Road Tests at GPS Driving School

To advance from a Level I learner’s permit to a Level II provisional license, teens must successfully pass a road test. Until recently, all road tests were conducted exclusively at a DMV driver’s license office. Now, eligible applicants may also complete their road test at GPS Driving School, offering a convenient alternative to the DMV.

To be eligible to take the road test at GPS Driving School, the applicant must:

    1. Be at least 16 years old

    2. Hold a valid Level I learner’s permit

    3. Have held the permit for at least 9 months

    4. Have logged at least 60 driving hours in compliance with driving log requirements

    5. Have no convictions for moving violations, seatbelt violations, or mobile phone use within the past 6 months

Why take your road test at GPS Driving School instead of the DMV?

After passing the road test at GPS Driving School, the applicant will receive a Road Test Certificate confirming successful completion of the exam. This certificate can be presented to the North Carolina DMV, saving time and reducing the risk of an additional DMV visit if the test is not passed on the first attempt.

At the DMV, applicants must wait seven days before retaking a failed road test. At GPS Driving School, the waiting period for a retake is just 48 hours.

Our road test professionals are kind, patient, and fair. They take the time to explain the testing process clearly and help applicants feel comfortable and confident before the exam begins.

How does the road test work at GPS Driving School?

The road test is conducted at our Clayton location and is administered by Bill Messick. Bill and his wife, Kristine, have owned and operated GPS Driving School since 2016. Over the years, the school has taught more than 3,000 students and conducted over 100 driver education classes.

The road test at GPS Driving School closely mirrors the DMV road test. It takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and evaluates the same driving skills required by the DMV.

What is the cost of the road test?

The road test fee is $125, which includes:

    1. Optional use of a GPS Driving School vehicle for the test

    2. Access to our online video, “How to Pass Your Road Test,” produced by GPS Driving School

    3. One complimentary re-test if the applicant does not pass on the first attempt

What if I do not pass the road test?

If the applicant does not pass, Bill will review the specific skills that need improvement. The road test may be retaken after 48 hours, and the first re-test is provided at no additional charge.
